DRESSX x Kalista

Digital fashion collection / Lauched at DressX on 2023
Coming to Roblox and AR try on 2024

The concept of the collection is an imaginary narrative of avant-garde fashion in a Nordic dystopian archipelago. It's inspired by the duality of life and the contrasts between darkness and light, which in the North vary greatly. Soft/hard, smoot/jagged, shiny/matte, old/new, organic/synthetic vary within the collection. In particular, the collection reflects the aesthetics of traditional Finnish fabric materials, combined with futuristic, synthetic tech-wear accessories and high fashion elements. It celebrates the beauty that comes from gloom, channeling the adaptivity and resourcefullness in harsh conditions. The collection also evokes Finnish fashion during the recession of the 90s in an ordinary working-class family, where women were at once style-conscious entrepreneurs in their elegant trouser suits, as well as skilled foresters and anglers, in their rubber boots and cottage clothes.

Through the collection I wanted to demonstrate both my design skills for dynamic 3D fabrics and my talent for 3D sculpting and modelling rigid object design. In the collection I wanted to bring together a wide range of skills, especially in creating complete looks, from details, to silhouettes, to a coherent collection with a fully developed story behind it.

Collection background story

In a not-too-distant future, the world has been ravaged by climate change and societal collapse. The survivors of this new world order have fled to the remote Nordic archipelago, seeking refuge from the chaos of the mainland. Here, they have forged a new way of life, embracing the stark beauty of their surroundings and drawing strength from the melancholy that permeates the landscape. In a Nordic archipelago dystopia, the line between darkness and light, softness and hardness is blurred. The people of this world have learned to live with duality, finding strength and depth in their pain. Amidst the gloom and harshness of their surroundings, they have also found beauty and enliven their everyday lives with dark humor, embracing the imperfections of theirselves.

In this world, fashion has taken on a new significance. No longer a frivolous pursuit, it has become a means of survival, a way of expressing the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Inspired by the functionalism of Finnish design and nature surroundings, collection merges high fashion trends with a dystopian narrative of survival and resilience. But this collection is not just about fashion. It's also about cherishing the persistency and self-sufficiency of the people who inhabit this dystopian world. Each piece is imbued with a sense of depth, reflecting the polarity of life in the Nordic archipelago. And yet, there is al
so a sense of humor, hope and possibility, a belief that even in the darkest times, there is still room for creativity, beauty and innovation. It's about embracing the pain and grief of the past, and using it as a source of strength for the future. Also manifesting the idea, that merging with technology does not necessarily take us further away from nature, but on the contrary.

Materials and fabric

Inspired by the aesthetics of traditional Finnish fabrics and futuristic synthetic technology, the collection celebrates the oppositions of life in the archipelago. The fabrics are a fusion of soft and hard materials, incorporating coarse and smooth textures combined with metallic accents. The collection includes traditional Finnish fabrics, such as wool and linen, which have been woven into modern, futuristic designs. The result is a collection that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking, celebrating the past while embracing the possibilities of the future. Essential element of the fabrics is a noticing of Finnish fashion from the recession-era in the 90s. The women of that time were style-conscious career women, but they were also meticulous sailors, knowing how to survive in the wilderness. They were consumption-conscious, having a particular focus on Finnish domestic design, that was functional and sustainable. This collection pays homage to that spirit of practicality and style, blending the traditional with the futuristic.
